Badaling Great Wall

The Badaling section of the Great Wall is the most famous, well-restored, and most visited part of the wall near Beijing. It was the first section opened to tourists, in 1957, and has been extensively restored, making it a good choice for first-time visitors.

1. Why Visit Badaling?

  • Accessibility: Only about 70–80 km (45–50 miles) from central Beijing, reachable in roughly 1.5–2 hours by car/bus.

  • Highly Restored: The wall here is in excellent condition, with clear walkways, handrails, and steps, which makes it easier and safer to climb.

  • Scenic Views: You can see rolling mountains and the winding structure of the wall snaking up and down the ridges.

  • Facilities: Cable cars, pulleys, restrooms, snack stands, and shops are available, which is convenient for families and older travelers.

  • Historical Significance: This section was built during the Ming Dynasty to protect the capital region.

2. What to Expect When Visiting

  • Crowds: Especially on weekends, public holidays, and summer. Arrive early (before 9:00 am) to avoid the worst of the queues.

  • Walking Difficulty:

    • The main path is paved, but there are steep sections with many steps.

    • Comfortable shoes are essential.

  • Cable Car Option:

    • A cable car runs from the base to a higher point, allowing you to skip the steepest climb.

  • Restoration: Because it is so well maintained, it may look “too perfect” compared to unrestored sections like Jiankou or Gubeikou, but it remains impressive.

3. Tips for Your Visit

  • Best Times:

    • Spring (April–May) and Autumn (September–October) offer pleasant weather and clearer skies.

    • Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.

  • Opening Hours: Typically around 7:30–8:00 am to 5:00–6:00 pm, varying slightly by season.

  • Tickets: Purchase online or at the gate; prices vary depending on whether you take the cable car or not.

  • Safety:

    • Stay behind guardrails.

    • Watch your footing on uneven steps.

    • Carry water and sun protection in summer; wear layers in winter.
